The Saturday before Halloween we hosted a pumpkin carving party at the house – it was the first official party since we’ve had the house fixed up, and it was so much fun to spend time with close friends and family. Thanks to everyone who came!
I won’t show any pictures of the disaster of an owl I attempted to carve into a pumpkin (mainly because I didn’t snap any pictures), but I did want to share a fun idea that you might find handy for that next Halloween party you throw.
The fireplace is one of my favorite parts of owning a home, and because we currently don’t have any logs in ours, I’ve had to get creative with candles. But for the party, I wanted to really do something out of the ordinary:
Next year, I plan to add some colorful fall leaves to the display, but here’s how to make it happen:
- You’ll need 7 Pumpkin Pie Pumpkins (or one for each letter of the word you want to spell).
- Let the pumpkins sit for 2 weeks so that they’ll be soft enough to carve. Two weeks is the perfect amount of time – I let mine sit for 3 weeks, and 2 of them began to rot.
- Use a Sharpie to draw the letters onto the pumpkins, then carve away.
- Create a stand. You’ll want the pumpkins at different heights to create this effect. In this case, I used 2 black candlesticks and one wrought iron candelabra. If you look closely, you can see them in the pictures. It’s important that whatever you use for a stand blends in with the background of your fireplace. An alternative is to turn Tupperware dishes upside town and cover with a black cloth.

We had so much fun!! I think it should be an annual thing!!! Your “WELCOME” pumpkins were so cute. What a great idea to take them outside to welcome your trick or treaters? Did you get rid of all that candy??
Thanks, Katy! I am so glad you and Pearson came. We gave away 2 of our big bags, but we had to take the rest to work and give to our co-workers so we wouldn’t eat it all!
